I’ve been trying to get to one of the My Space for Parents sessions that my library system has been offering, but I keep having other more important things to do. As a parent of a young teen who previously thought MySpace was “dumb,” I should have known that my reprieve was to be short term. This weekend my wife and I had a great discussion with my oldest about MySpace and Internet use in general. Our family PC is in the den and is shared by all. My oldest is the new MySpace user, but she’s already set me up as a friend and readily agreed to have me visit her page anytime.
Take a look at Matt Gullett’s blog post My Space for Parents, Pt. 2 over at Youth Tech. Matt is the Technology Education Librarian at ImaginOn and he’s lead a number of learning sessions on MySpace for parents. Are you engaging your community’s parents AND teens in dialogue about MySpace? If you’re not, you should be.
More on the reality of MySpace in my own home in later postings.
